| Scene 29 ~
Bilbo's Gifts
 |

    | | |

    | A sack cloth
is drawn aside, revealing a small sword
 |

    | BILBO: | My old sword, Sting (Bilbo picks up
the sword and hands it to Frodo.  They are in Bilbo's bedchamber in
Rivendell) Here, take it, take it.
 |

    | Frodo draws
the sword from its sheath, looking at it in awe
 |

    | FRODO: | Its so light!
 |

    | BILBO: | Yes Yes (Frodo turns it round looking
at the blade) Made by the elves you know.  The blade glows blue
when orcs are close and its times like that my lad, when you have to be
extra careful. Here's a pretty thing. (he lifts a shiny metallic
shirt from his bed and holds it up for Frodo to see) Mithril!
(he holds it in front of Frodo and shakes it)
as light as a feather and as hard as dragon scales.  Let me see you put
    it on, go on.

 |

    | Frodo begins
to unbutton his shirt revealing the Ring around his neck.  Bilbo spots
it and takes a breath.  Frodo suddenly notices Bilbo staring at it
 |

    | BILBO: | (pointing at the Ring) My my
old ring.  Well I should... very much like to hold it again, one last
    time.
 |

    | Frodo begins
to button his shirt back up again.
Suddenly Bilbo, looking wild, makes a swift grab for it.  Frodo jumps
back looking shocked.  Bilbo falls back with his hand to his head
    looking distraught.
 |

    | BILBO: | I'm sorry I brought this upon you my boy
(tearfully) I'm sorry that you must carry this
burden (he slumps down on his bed and starts to cry).
     I'm sorry for everything
 |

    | Frodo walks
over to him and puts his hand on his shoulder.  Bilbo holds Frodo's
    hand.
 |

    | Scene 30 ~
The Departure of the Fellowship

 |

    | Elrond is
    speaking outside in Rivendell
 |

    | ELROND: | The Ringbearer is setting out on the quest of Mount Doom and
you who travel with him, (the fellowship is standing
in front of him) no oath nor bond is laid to go further than you will (Aragorn smiles at Arwen who drops her head)  Farewell. Hold to
your purpose and may the blessings of elves (looking
at Legolas), and men (looking at Boromir),
and all free folk (looking at Gimli) go with
you. (he raises his hand and gestures for them to
    leave)

 |

    | GANDALF: | The Fellowship awaits the Ringbearer.
 |

    | Frodo looks
nervously around and turns to walk through the arches.
 |

    | FRODO: | Mordor, Gandalf, is it left or right ?
 |

    | GANDALF: | (places a hand on his shoulder)
    Left.
 |

    | Frodo leads
out, Gandalf, Gimli, Boromir, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Sam... Aragorn pauses
and looks back at Arwen. They exchange a long glance.  Aragorn smiles,
nods his head, and follows the others. Arwen swallows and bows her head.
 The Fellowship leaves Rivendell.

    | Scene 31 ~
The Ring Goes South

 |

    | The
Fellowship walk over mountains, past ancient ruins, over hills
 |

    | GANDALF VOICEOVER: | We must hold this course west of the Misty Mountains for
forty days. If our luck holds the Gap of Rohan will still be open to us.
(Sam takes sausages from a frying pan
on an open fire.) and there are
    road turns east to Mordor.
 |

    | Sam walks
over with the plate to Frodo who is sitting watching Merry and Pippin
practice sword fighting with Boromir.  Aragorn looks on also smoking a
    pipe.
 |

    | BOROMIR: | Good, very good. (he continues to
    practice with Pippin)
 |

    | ARAGORN: | Move your feet
 |

    | MERRY: | You look good Pippin
 |

    | PIPPIN: | (looking over his shoulder at Merry)
Thanks (Merry joins the practice, Sam and Frodo look
    on grinning)
 |

    | GIMLI: | (who is sitting behind them on the
rocks, near to Gandalf, whilst Legolas stands keeping watch) If
anyone was to ask for my opinion, which I note that they're not, I'd say
that we were taking the long way round. Gandalf, we could pass through the
Mines of Moria.  My cousin Balin would give us a royal welcome.
 |

    | GANDALF: | No Gimli, I would not take the road through Moria unless I
    had no other choice.
 |

    | Legolas runs
in front of them and stands and stares at a grey cloud in the distance.
Gandalf pauses to follow his eyes. Meanwhile, Boromir's sword slips and he cuts Pippin's hand with his sword.
    Pippin drops his sword

 |

    | PIPPIN: | ARGH!
 |

    | BOROMIR: | Sorry! (he steps forward to look at
    Pippin's hand)
 |

    | Pippin kicks
    Boromir in the leg.
 |

    | MERRY: | Get him! (he throws himself at
    Boromir)
 |

    | The two
hobbits wrestle Boromir to the ground and jump on him.  Aragorn looks
    on amused.
 |

    | PIPPIN: | For the Shire.  Hold him, hold him down Merry!
    (Boromir laughs)
 |

    | ARAGORN: | (getting up and taking hold of the
hobbits) Gentlemen, that's enough! (Merry and
Pippin grab Aragorn's legs, throwing him backwards onto the ground)
 |

    | PIPPIN: | You've got my arm... argh!... you've got my arm
 |

    | Sam stands up
and notices that the cloud looking like dark specks is moving towards them
 |

    | SAM: | What is that ?
 |

    | GIMLI: | Nothing, its just a whisp of cloud
 |

    | BOROMIR: | (pausing from the scuffle looks up)
Its moving fast.... against the wind
 |

    | LEGOLAS: | Crebain! From Dudland!
 |

    | ARAGORN: | Hide! (he runs to grab his sword)
 |

    | BOROMIR: | Hurry!
 |

    | ARAGORN: | (grabs his sword) Frodo! Take
    cover!
 |

    | They all run
gathering their things and dousing the fire, and dash under the rocks out of
sight A great flock of black crows flies over them, circles around and then flies
    off
The Fellowship emerge from their hiding places

 |

    | GANDALF: | Spies of Saruman.  The passage south is being watched
(Frodo looks distressed)  We must take the
Pass of Caradhras (they look up at the snowy peaked
    mountains)
 |

    | | |

    | Scene 32 ~
The Pass of Caradhras

 |

    | The
Fellowship are walking up the snowy slopes of the mountain.  Frodo
stumbles, falls and rolls back down the slope
 |

    | ARAGORN: | Frodo! (he catches him and picks him
    up)
 |

    | Frodo brushes
the snow off himself, and notices that the Ring is no longer handing round
his neck.  Further up the mountain the Ring is picked up on its chain.
Frodo looks concerned.  Boromir holds the Ring dangling in front of his
face in awe.  Gandalf turns around.  Everyone looks concerned
 |

    | ARAGORN: | Boromir
 |

    | BOROMIR: | It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and
doubt over so small a thing (he is mesmerised by it)
such a little thing (he raises his hand to
touch the Ring dangling on the chain)
 |

    | ARAGORN: | (urgently) Boromir!
(Boromir abruptly stops, halted from his isolation)
    Give the Ring to Frodo
 |

    | BOROMIR: | (looking shocked and
walks to a worried Frodo and holds out the Ring.  Frodo snatches it
from him) as you wish! I care not (he grins,
hestitates as he sees Aragorn's face, laughs and ruffles Frodo's hair,
    before walking off)
 |

    | Aragorn
stares after him and releases his grip on his sword
 |

    | In Isengard,
the mines are deep.  The Crebain circle around inside them, until they
    find Saruman.
 |

    | SARUMAN: | So Gandalf, you try to lead them over Caradhras.  And
if that fails, where then will you go ?
 |

    | The
Fellowship struggle around the side of the mountain, through deep snow,
    strong winds and heavy snowfall
 |

    | SARUMAN VOICEOVER: | If the mountain defeats you will you risk a more dangerous
    road

 |

    | As the
Fellowship struggle on, the hobbits being carried by Aragorn and Boromir who
are thigh deep in the snow, Legolas lightly walks across the snow past them
to the head of the line. He listens as he hears echos on the wind
 |

    | SARUMAN: | Cuiva nwalca Carnirasse; nai yarvaxea rasselya! (Wake up
cruel Redhorn! May your horn be bloodstained!)
 |

    | LEGOLAS: | There is a fell voice on the air
 |

    | GANDALF: | It's Saruman!
 |

    | A mighty
crack is heard overhead, and great chunks of rock fall down from the
    mountain top, narrowly missing them
 |

    | ARAGORN: | He's trying to bring down the mountain! Gandalf! We must
    turn back!
 |

    | GANDALF: | No! (he steps out to the edge of the
path) Losto Caradhras, sedho, hodo, nuitho i 'ruith! (Sleep,
Caradhras, be still, lie still, hold your wrath!)
 |

    | SARUMAN: | (standing on top of Isengard drowns
him out) Cuiva nwalca Carnirasse; Nai yarvaxea rasselya; taltuva
notto-carinnar! (Wake up cruel Redhorn! May your bloodstained horn fall
    upon enemy heads!)
 |

    | A great
streak of lightning hits the top of the mountain above the Fellowship and an
avalanche of snow rains down on top of them, burying them underneath it.
Moments later Legolas emerges from the snow. He looks around to see the
    others emerge
 |

    | BOROMIR: | We must get off the mountain! Make for the Gap of Rohan and
take the west road to my city!
 |

    | ARAGORN: | The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard!
 |

    | GIMLI: | If we cannot pass over the mountain, let us go under it! Let
us go through the Mines of Moria
 |

    | Gandalf
    pauses thinking
 |

    | SARUMAN VOICEOVER: | Moria... you fear to go into those mines.
 |

    | SARUMAN: | (in Isengard flicking through a book,
stops at a page showing Moria Gate) the dwarves delved too greadily
    and too deep
 |

    | SARUMAN VOICEOVER: | (as Gandalf hears him knowingly)
You know what they woke in the dark of Khazad-dûm
 |

    | SARUMAN: | (turning over another page to show
    a firey balrog) Shadow, flame
 |

    | GANDALF: | Let the Ringbearer decide
 |

    | Frodo looks
    confused and turns to Sam
 |

    | BOROMIR: | We cannot stay here! (Merry and Pippin
look frozen and scared next to him) This will be the death of the
    hobbits!
 |

    | GANDALF: | Frodo ?
 |

    | FRODO: | (hesitating) We will go through
    the Mines
 |

    | GANDALF: | So be it
 |
